Planner at Department of Planning and Development in Providence, RI

The City of Providence is now accepting applications for a Planner position within the Department of Planning and Development. Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 12, 2018. In particular we are seeking planners or urban designers with interest in graphic design, community engagement, urban design, and/or landscape architecture.  This is an exciting opportunity to participate in neighborhood planning, urban design and landscape architecture-related projects, community engagement, planning policy development, transportation and Complete Streets planning and implementation, and projects like a reboot of #PopUpPVD (our tactical urbanism program), #CityWalkPVD, the #Woonasquatucket Greenway Extension, the #610Connector project, implementation of the #Woonasquatucket Vision Plan, and more.

Summary: Under general supervision of the Deputy Director of Planning and Development or designee, the Planner performs responsible administrative, technical planning, and urban redevelopment work of a complex and professional nature in assisting the Deputy Director for Planning, the Associate Director of Special Projects and Principal Planners in the completion of planning projects; and related work as required. Work assignments are received from a superior and are usually general in nature. Work elements include writing, public speaking, and the use of various types of computer software and programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation, mapping, and graphic design. Work is reviewed in its broader aspects for compliance with the standards and principles of community planning.


  1. Master’s degree in planning from a college or university accredited by the American Planning Association,


Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, urban affairs, or related field plus three (3) years experience in planning.

  1. Detailed and demonstrable knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques involved in city planning including, but not limited to, preparing capital improvements, comprehensive plans, urban redevelopment programs, zoning ordinances and land development regulations; administering planning projects; assigning and supervising the work of technical staff; and giving presentations to technical groups on general planning and urban redevelopment matters.
  2. Ability to perform complex technical research and analysis, compile comprehensive reports, work with computers and computer programs, and make recommendations for the practicable applications of findings.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and the general public.
  5. Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe Creative Suite.  Experience or interest in web design, graphic design, and ARC GIS is desirable.
  6. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Salary: $50,772.24 starting salary with annual step increases up to $57,003.07. Excellent benefits. 35 hours/week

Horticultural manager to work on Bellevue Ave property in Newport RI. Maintain high horticultural standards and practices, actively working in the daily horticultural tasks in the exterior gardens. Manage and support overall plant health and soil nutrition strategies for all gardens.
Strong knowledge and experience with the pruning of standard and espalier fruit bearing trees (i.e. apples, pear, peach), woodland management, seasonal vegetable gardens, ornamental trees and shrubs, maintaining clipped hedges, Roes gardens and annual and perennial beds.
